The Beautiful Game

Most people don’t know that I have a passion for soccer. Soccer was not offered in my high school but if it had, it would have been my sport. I was relegated to soccer with a stick. Friends that visit my children on match day have gotten used to the celebratory screams that erupt with every goal scored. It doesn’t matter if it’s my team or not– if it’s beautiful, it warrants the scream.
Yesterday, of course, was the 2011 Women’s World Cup final with Japan and the USA facing off in Frankfurt. Sports lovers in the US rallied around the women’s national team in 1991 when they reigned supreme during the very first Women’s World Cup ever held. And also in 1999, when Brandi Chastain ripped her shirt off in celebration after beating China’s goalkeeper with a goal in a shootout to win the game and the cup. That was an edge-of-your-seat game.
So was yesterday’s and many screams where heard. I was struck by how fairly the women played on both teams. Their focus was on soccer not on play acting injuries and wasting time that is so often prevalent in the men’s game. Maybe it’s all that feminine energy that is streaming through the cosmos to Earth that helped inspire the spirit of fair play.
The US was factored to win the cup. And it looked like they were going to. But the soccer gods and goddesses decided otherwise. Despite the US taking the lead twice, Japan rallied to tie in overtime and defeat us in penalty kicks. It shocked the world. But looking at the faces of those Japanese women athletes, I couldn’t help but think and feel that this victory will spread some joy and with it healing that is needed in a country struggling with the aftermath of a nuclear disaster. Surely, the soccer deities are smiling.
